Fund templates - internal

Your Symplany℠ plan will determine the ideal allocation of stocks, bonds and cash in a client's account. But it's your particular investment philosophy that will determine what funds represent each of those three asset classes. Symplany℠ streamlines this process with fund templates.

A fund template / model schema will first help you determine what sub-asset classes (e.g. domestic bonds, high-yield bonds, small cap blend, international large cap, etc.) will represent each asset. The fund template will then help you determine which funds will represent each sub-asset classes.

The advisor has complete control of this process. Advisors can choose from a handful of default options, or they can create their own unique fund template. Fund templates capture and streamline the implementation of your investment philosophy.

You can set an account's fund template on the Trade page. You have the option to either:

  1. Use a default template OR
  2. Create your own fund template

*Note: Most advisors choose a default fund template since they are created, managed, and updated by the firm. It is your responsibility to manage and update the custom fund templates you create.*

Default template

Step 1. Identify the type of fund template needed

The fund template you choose will likely depend on both the size and type of account you are managing.

  • Size
    • If the account is smaller (e.g. less than $50k), advisors typically do not want a fund template with too many funds.
    • For example, instead of having separate funds for large cap value and large cap growth, an advisor will instead opt to hold one large cap blend fund.
  • Type
    • Holdings in a qualified (tax-deferred) account have different implications than holdings in a non-qualified (after-tax) account.
    • For example, non-qualified accounts will likely use a fund template that does not hold real-estate funds and uses municipal bonds instead of international bonds.

Step 2. Select a corresponding fund template

Most advisors choose one of the default templates.

For example,

  • Smaller accounts will use a template that has blended funds (e.g. core), larger accounts will use growth and value funds (e.g. strategic)
  • Non-qualified accounts will use a template that only has tax-aware funds
